The Google Pixel as the smaller variant of the duo in terms of size, comes with a premium design, latest Android Operating System, unique Google features and other high end features that has made it comparable to the Iphone 7 and the explosive Samsung Note 7. The Pixel also features great cameras and software based around Google Assistant. Given below are the specifications of the first phone made by Google, the Pixel.

Overview Features

Display and Build

The Pixel has a 5.0 Inch AMOLED display screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and pixel density of  441 PPI. At that display size, this smartphone can be handled comfortably even with one hand. The Pixel's body is built with metal and a 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 4 on the front and back. This aluminum build ensures the device has durability and a premuim design, and the glass will serve as a protection against cracks and scratches on the screen. The Google Pixel is available in three colors which are labelled by Google as Very Silver, Quite Black and a limited edition for U.S. only, Really Blue.

This smartphone also comes with a fingerprint sensor that is located at the device's rear. This serves as an enhancement of user security and according to Google, users can swipe the sensor to access their notifications. The Pixel is not entirely dust proof and waterproof as it comes with an IP53 rating. The rating '5' against solids means that, dust is not entirely prevented, hence it should not enter the phone in large amounts, while the rating '3' against liquids, means that water falling as a spray at any angle up to 60° from the vertical, may have no harmful effect.

Google Assistant

The Google Pixel comes with Google’s powered natural language digital assistant called, Google Assistant. Using machine learning and Google's vast search database, the Assistant answers questions asked by the user and searches for pictures, then displays web results. It also speaks at unexpected moments. In other words, the Assistant helps people to easily find information without typing,  and after every query, suggested follow-up queries are provided.

The Assistant can also play games, schedule reminders, set alarms, give directions, tell jokes and read poems. By a long press of the Home button, one can have a natural conversation with the Assistant which usually involves a question and answer segment. You can ask for a video on YouTube, ask for directions like with a GPS, and get daily updates such as weather and news. And the more you use it, the more it's supposed to learn about you and become more personalized.

Hardware and Software

Google Pixel runs on the latest Android operating system, Android 7.1 Nougat. This OS replaces the homescreen search bar found on other versions of the OS with a pill shaped widget. Now, users can access apps by swiping up from the bottom of the display. Users get circular app icons and folders, app shortcuts and enhanced live wallpapers. Support for split screen apps can be seen on the Nougat, where you can open the multi-tasking menu and drag one of the apps to the upper or lower part of the screen to start the split screen.

The Pixel is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset with two dual-core processors clocked at 2.15GHz and 1.6GHz respectively. This processor works fast and fluidly with little or no lags while mulitasking and playing graphic intensive games. This smartphone has 4GB RAM and based on storage options, there are the 32GB and 128GB variants, both of which are not expandable via microSD card. This storage although not large enough especially the 32GB variant and without support for expansion, should still be able to accommodate quite a good number of photos and videos. Users of this device also get unlimited cloud storage if in any case they need more storage space.

Camera

The Pixel features a 12.3MP rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture and 1.55 micron pixels to capture lots of light. Its Image stabilization technology ensures that the quality of videos and images are not affected when the device in motion while capturing. One can capture images with great quality in either low light or bright light conditions. Other features of Google Pixel's camera include  HDR, phase detection autofocus, dual-LED flashlight, and Panorama. The smartphone also comes with an 8MP camera for taking selfies and making video calls.

It is said that the Pixel's camera is as good as that of the  Galaxy S7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, if not better. According to Google, the Pixel camera is not only the best smartphone camera they've ever made, but the highest rated smartphone camera anyone has ever made. This claim was backed up by results from a DxOMark Mobile test score of 89, giving it the highest ranking phone camera hence, users of this device should expect images captured by the Pixel’s to have superb quality.

Battery and Connectivity

The battery capacity of Google Pixel is 2,770 mAh and at that capacity, it can last a whole day when its subjected to medium usage. This battery is non-removable and employs a fast charging technology with its reversible USB Type-C charger that gives up to 7 hours of battery life with 15 minutes charge. Users can get up to 456 hours of standby time on 3G, up to 26 hours of talk time on 3G and up to 110 hours of music play time. Tech Lass's Verdict:

The Google Pixel comes with great features like its highly optimized cameras, Google assistant that takes the most natural approach to answering users queries, and display that is clear and vivid. Not only does the Pixel comes with an attractive design, it can provide an acceptable level of performance and has unique Google features that cannot be found on any other android smartphone.

Although the Pixel can resist a few splashes, it is not entirely water resistant, hence users may be less worried while under the rain with this device, but will have to think twice before entering the pool with it. For a high end device, its design is not as sleek when compared to that of  Iphone's and Samsung's high end devices.

One also has to keep in mind that this device's storage is not expandable, but then, the capacity of its Internal storage combined with the free online storage, users might not have need for an external storage device. Though expensive with other downsides as listed above, it is still a great smartphone matched with great hardware and great software..
