But what happens when your rankings on Google is high, while on search engine result pages owned by Microsoft, your site is nowhere to be found?
Your questions regarding,
- Bing & Yahoo not Indexing my website,
- Ranking on Yahoo and Bing, but not on Google why?
- How can I also rank for Yahoo and Bing?
- Why do Google and Bing rank things differently?
Have been covered in this post.
Although Google is the most popular search engine that can send the highest number of visitors to your site, there is need to be well positioned on other search engines.
I'll tell you why:
Compared to the latter, it is easier to rank on Bing, Yahoo, and even Yandex because there is less competition.
Some web pages that are displayed on the first page of Google search results are not even on Bing or are not ranked on subsequent pages.
Whether the site owner did not take time to submit their site or a sitemap to other search engines, that's not our concern.
So, are there differences between Google and Bing Algorithms that would bring about these variations in rankings?
But before I proceed,
What is Search Algorithm
In computer programming, an algorithm is a series of steps that determine how a problem is solved.
It is the simple steps to the solution of a problem.
Looking at it from that perspective, a search algorithm is a list of steps/criteria a website must meet to be ranked on a search engine result pages.
Google, Bing, and Yahoo each have their own algorithms which are similar but different in many ways.
What could be seen as a Blackhat method by the other or deceptive to visitors leading to the penalization of a site, one can still go scot free with the other.
What exactly are these algorithms?
They are divided into on page and off page search engine optimization techniques and include:
- The number of backlinks to a site.
- Keyword placement in the site's content.
- Page loading speed of a site
- The appropriate use of header tags.
- The length of a post.
- The page's rank.
- Mobile Friendliness and responsiveness of the site on any device.
And several others!
Here are two ways:
How high a site is ranked, or how low is determined by these algorithms.
Since the algorithms are constantly changing, they determine the current search rankings for all websites on the net.
Now while these algorithms are similar across search engines, there are still notable differences among each, where some are easier to achieve than others.
In the images below, you can see the difference in rankings on Google and Bing for Techlass blog using the same keywords.
This can be attributed to the algorithms of each engine.
Importance of Ranking High on Google and Bing
Considering the fact that you can get as much traffic as possible from only Google,
What if you could get more just by applying some simple methods?
This will ensure that you reach as many potential customers as possible because some searches made don't only come from Google.
Some browsers like USA Firefox and Cortana by default use Bing as their search engine.
Some users of Windows 10 have complained that it forces them to use Bing irrespective of the settings.
A 2017 search engine statistics by smartsights shows that about 6,586,013,574 searches are made in a day worldwide
And in that number, we have
4,464,000,000 : Google
873,964,000 : Bing
583,520,803 : Baidu
536,101,505 : Yahoo
128,427,264 : Others
Deducing from this statistics, Google and Bing are the highest.
Taking advantage of the 7% daily searches from Bing can do a lot for your site.
While Bing and Yahoo have an alliance that entails ranking on one to also bring about good rankings on the other, this gives you an extra edge in your quest.
Now that you know why you should be concerned about having high rankings on all three of the most popular search engines on the internet,
Here's how to have good rankings on Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask.com and the rest.
How to Rank Your Site High on Google and Bing
Understand the general search algorithm patterns for all the engines because Bing, Yahoo, and Google have SEO Similarities.
As earlier stated, to rank high on any of these requires on page and off page SEO techniques
For On page SEO:
1. Find broken links on your site:
Broken links on any site give a bad user experience, whereas search engines strive to provide a good user experience by presenting the best results to the user.
If your site has several broken links, it means it is working against this purpose.
As a consequence,
It is ranked farther on their pages, which means the lesser the number of people it'll be shown to.
How can you find and correct links that are broken on your site?
By using any of these free online broken links checker tools.
You can also use Google Webmaster tools to crawl and find broken links on your site.
This tool is very easy to use, it shows Individual pages on your site that cannot be crawled by the Google bot due to a broken link or bad redirect leading to a 404/400 error.
To do find broken links with Google Webmaster Tools,
- Log into your Webmaster's account.
- Navigate to the site which you want to find broken links on
- Goto the 'Crawl Errors' section.
- If you get a list of errors, then fix the broken links on those pages by replacing them with the correct links.
- If the page which was linked to has already been deleted, then do 301 URL redirect to the new page where the same information exists.
For those on Blogger platform,
- Goto the 'Settings' section
- Click on 'Search Preferences'
- Goto to the 'Custom Redirect' section
- Enter the inaccessible URL and the new URL,
- Tick the checkbox 'Permanent'
- Then save.
2. Improve the page load time of your site:
Speed means users will spend less time finding more content on your site.
It also means search engines will spend less time crawling the site to display in search results.
For every 1 second your site delays, another site is outranking it.
If it takes Google, Bing, and other search engines less than 1 second to display a search result page, then you should reduce the page load time on your site by:
- Deleting unnecessary widgets/gadgets
- Reducing the number of ads on your site or place them after/below the post or sidebar region.
- Reducing the number of pop ads/ pop widgets or not using them at all.
- Using a default blogger template which tends to load faster than some custom blogger templates.
- Within posts, reducing the image resolution and compressing its size.
3. Include keywords with high search volumes within your post:
Keywords are major criteria for rankings in any search engine.
They determine if the same or related search string has been entered by the user in a search engine.
While the keywords you include in your post matters, their placements are just as important.
That being so,
You should include keywords in the:
- Post title,
- First and last 100 words of the post,
- Post URL,
- Post labels,
- Post search description and,
- Post header tags
4. Quality content supersedes all:
For off-page SEO:
1. Build high-quality backlinks:
Like the common belief that:
Without backlinks, one can still rank high using keywords with high search volume and low competition, one can also rank high using quality backlinks even with poor keyword placement.
These two are the most powerful tools in ranking any site high.
Backlinks have about 60% influence on a site's position in search engines, a good proportion to ensure your site lands on page 1 of Google or Bing.
How do you build backlinks?
In an earlier publication by TechLass on how to build quality backlinks when you have no money, it shows various ways you can acquire free backlinks to your site.
How to Rank High On Bing and Yahoo
If you're already ranking well on Google, but still having discrepancies in your Bing and Yahoo rankings, then you should know the SEO differences between Google and Bing as this will enable you to optimize properly.
Yahoo and Bing are practically the same since they partnered in July of 2009.
On that account,
The ranking factors for Bing and Yahoo are pretty much the same since the data crawled for various types of searches will mostly be the same.
To improve your site's visibility on Bing and Yahoo search engine result pages,
1. Submit Your Site to Bing:Like Google Webmaster tools for site owners, there is also Bing Webmaster tools which you have to submit your site too.
Although some sites get ranked on Bing even without being submitted first for indexing, the same may not be the case for your site.
Your first step here is to register a Microsoft account, then submit your site to Bing accompanied by a Sitemap and Robots.txt file.
2. Improve your social signal:
Bing uses a site's popularity on social networks as a ranking factor while Google, on the other hand, does not.
The number of Facebook Likes, Twitter tweets and retweets, and Google +1s matter to Bing.
That being the case,
Include a social share button on your site to give your visitors ease in sharing your content across different social networks.
Automatically link your site to your social pages like Google+, Facebook, and Twitter so that your posts will be shared with your readers each time the site has been updated.
3. Improve the engagement on your site:Engagement here involves how the user interacts with your site on arrival from Bing search engine.
Do they visit from Bing and then leave immediately after the first click?
Do they visit more pages, share the content and even go as far as leaving a comment?
By the way:
More comments on your blog can lead to higher rankings as Bing/Yahoo uses this as a search ranking.
The keywords in the comments section of a website are also crawled and used to rank a site on the result pages.
To improve your site's engagement,
- Improve the quality of your posts.
- Use a related posts/random posts/popular posts widget on your blog to give easy access to more pages on your site.
- Internally link posts that are related to one another within the post's content.
4. Keywords and Anchor Text
Google can crawl words that are similar in meaning to a particular keyword and rank a site for it (Latent Semantic Indexing).
Although this is possible on Google search engine, the same can't be said for Bing.
Instead, Bing search engine uses the keyword phrases inputted by a user to bring up results which will most times match those same keywords.
This also includes keywords used as anchor text for internal links in your post.
What you should do:
Ensure that all internally linked posts on your site have proper anchor text using relevant keywords.
The Bottom Line:
Depending on your SEO efforts and which direction the wind is blowing😖, you should be able to rank high on both Google and Bing.
