A review of Gionee A1 Plus shows that this smartphone is a higher variant of the Gionee A1 and a member of the A series. Both devices are the only and first members of this series and were launched in February 2017 at an event in the Mobile World Congress. Their Chinese manufacturer has been releasing devices with remarkable specs of late, and these two are among the best Gionee mobiles in 2017. We've seen great devices like the Gionee M5 and M6, both boasting of large battery capacity, but looks like Gionee's new trend is to combine large battery capacity and outstanding camera specs in their latest devices to give more competitive flagship devices.

While the A1 and A1 Plus are high end devices with highlights on their battery, great display screen and outstanding cameras, the latter has better specs compared to the former ranging from its larger build, humongous battery, faster processor to its more enhanced cameras. Since it features improved specs than its co-variant, compared to the latter, the Gionee A1 Plus Price is higher. Like the A1, this variant's specs centralizes majorly on its camera setup which are quite impressive. Other Gionee A1 Plus specifications that make it a better variant than the A1 and a more remarkable device are given below.

Gionee A1 Plus  Features

Display and Build

The Gionee A1 Plus features a 6.0 Inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and pixel density of 367 PPI(Pixels Per Inch). Though the pixel density of the A1 is higher, this screen type is better and the display is wider. Compared to the Gionee A1's display, this Phablet can provide a better viewing and gaming experience since colours are more natural with daylight readability. Giving the device a comfortable feel when handled and some resistance against scratches is a 2.5D Gorilla glass screen.

The Gionee A1 Plus features a fingerprint scanner that is located on the front of the smartphone. The position of this scanner differs from the rear position usually maintained by some devices and this makes it easier to unlock the phone even without lifting it first. Since fingerprints are unique, restrict access to unauthorized users and cannot be easily cracked by a computer software unlike Pins and passwords, this makes the device highly secured. One can carry out several other operations including online transactions without the need for a two-factor authentication.

The A1 Plus has a dimension of 166.40 x 83.30 x 9.10 (height x width x thickness) and weight 226g. With an increase in display size and battery capacity, it doesn't come as a surprise that this variant is 44g heavier and 0.8mm thicker than the A1. It is a large device that will be most appreciated by those who love a device with a large screen irrespective of its weight. Like the A1, this variant has a metallic build that gives it its premuim look and will make the device withstand wear and tear for a long time. It is available in different colour options of Gray and Mocha Gold.

Hardware and Software

The Gionee A1 Plus is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio P25 processor with a four cores running at 2.5GHz and the other four at 1.4Ghz. Same processor made but a speedier one on this variant results in faster processing. The device also has 4GB RAM and an inbuilt storage of 64GB that is expandable upto 256GB (hybrid slot) via microSD card. Good processor and large RAM translates into better multitasking even with graphic intensive games, and one that is done seamlessly. A storage and expandable capacity large enough to support several apps and games irrespective of their size only serves to improve user's experience with this device

Like the A1, the Plus also runs on the latest Android Operating System, Nougat 7.0 ontop Gionee's customized user interface Amigo 4.0. The combination of Amigo and Nougat brings about an enhanced Android experience. Nougat offers several features like a more efficient notification display where alerts can be expanded and collapsed with a button, and ease of replying to alerts right from the notification screen. There is also a data saver mode that disallows some apps from sending background data, and a battery saver mode that optimizes apps and reduces battery usage when the phone is not in use.

One of the major highlights of the Gionee A1 Plus is its cameras whose specs are quite remarkable. While most smartphones feature a higher resolution on their rear camera than their front camera, the reverse is the case on the Gionee A1 Plus as it is with the the A1. This smartphone features dual rear cameras with a resolution of 13MP and 5MP respectively, and a front camera with a resolution of 20MP. The resolution of one of the rear cameras is the same as that of the A1, but its front camera has been bumped up from the 16MP camera as found on the A1.

The front camera comes with an LED flash that allows images that are bright and natural looking to be captured in low light environments. There's also an independent facial enhancement algorithm that detects a user’s face and applies custom beauty settings to it automatically. For further enhancement of images, the rear camera features phase detection autofocus which results in sharper images even when the subject is in motion and a high dynamic range to produce images that are closer to what your eyes see.

Battery and Connectivity

The battery capacity of Gionee A1 Plus is 4550mAh and it is a slight increment over the 4100mAh battery of the Gionee A1. A larger screen with more device functions will definitely need more battery to power up this device during the day with a little juice left over. Nougat's battery saving features will ensure that the Plus has a long battery life and the data analytics integrated into this device will enable it to optimize performance under minimum power usage. The A1 Plus's battery is non-removable, is based on Li-on technology and has an 18W ultrafast charge that results in a fast charge.

The A1 Plus is a dual SIM smartphone that supports two Nano SIMs. Like the A1, the SIM 2 slot on the Plus is a hybrid slot that can either be used for a MicroSD card or a second SIM card. One will either have to give up an external storage media or another SIM depending on which has more priority to them. Other connectivity options of this device include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, NFC, USB OTG, 3G and 4G LTE with VoLTE. Its sensors are Accelorometer, Compass Magnetometer, Proximity, Ambient light sensor and Gyroscope sensors.

Price and Availability

Gionee A1 Plus is expected to be launched in May 2017, but currently, it is not yet available in Nigeria as with other African countries. When the smartphone is available, it can be purchased from reputable online stores in the country. On release, the Gionee A1 Plus price is expected to be around 449 Euros. Deducing from this, the Gionee A1 Plus Price in Nigeria is expected to range from 157,000 Naira to 195,000 Naira depending on your location in the country and the current exchange rate.

Tech Lass's Verdict:

From the Gionee A1 Plus full specifications outlined above, this is a great device and one that comes with a cost. The camera is outstanding and would most likely impress the self obsessed, and the RAM size that equates that of my PC is not a let down either. These and many more makes this device hold a promise of a high level of performance, but not without hurting your wallet.
