Samsung Galaxy S8 Specs & Price

Samsung Galaxy S8 Gsmarena Specs: As their 2017 flagship devices, Samsung has launched the S8 and S8 Plus as successors to the explosive Galaxy Note S7. The Note S7 even with its much admired specs didn't deliver as expected and didn't gain popularity among smartphone users due to the life threatening features it also came with, thereby being a total loss to the company and almost ruining their reputation. Now here's the Galaxy S8 sporting better specs than the previous model, about to be launched less than a year after the Galaxy S7 and will probably help regain users trust of the brand. According to Samsung, “The Galaxy S8 is our testament to regaining your trust by redefining what’s possible in safety and marks a new milestone in Samsung’s smartphone legacy.”

Samsung Galaxy S8

As is common practice by Samsung to release a lower variant of their flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is one of such devices. It is the lower speced version of the duo, comes with a premium design and several other impressive features. One would recall that the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge were among the best Android phones in 2016, and hence, much is expected from the Galaxy S8 especially high hopes that it's not going to also catch fire. A closer look at the Galaxy S8 specs shows that this device comes with an humongous display, improved user interface, OS and processor, tri-security which include a fingerprint sensor, Iris scanner, and face recognition. This and many more make this device a must have.

Overview Features

Display and Build

The Galaxy S8 is the first Samsung smartphone to feature on-screen navigation buttons, where the capacitive buttons have been taken away. In place of the home button, is a pressure-sensitive button that uses haptic feedback just like the Iphone 7. The S8 is also the first smartphone with a mobile high dynamic range premium certification, a certification that signifies that the Galaxy S8′s display can support HDR content, making it a smartphone that promises a vivid viewing experience. This device also features a 5.8-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2960 x 1440 pixels and pixel density of 570 PPI. On comparing the Infinity display of Galaxy S8 with that of the Iphone 7, the S8's display can be said to be sharper, brighter and offer more contrast than Apple’s Iphone.

The Galaxy S8 also has curved edges on the left and right sides of its display, and an 18.5:9 aspect ratio, both of which make it fit comfortably when held with one hand. On the screen and at its back is a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 that will protect this device from cracks and scratches on contact with rough and hard surfaces especially when the device drops from high heights. Not only is it damage resistant, but it also offers optical clarity and touch sensitivity. The Galaxy S8's body is made of a combination of metal and glass, it has a dimension of 148.9 x 68.1 x 8.0 mm and weight of 155g. With the Galaxy S8, you get a device with durability, quality finish and one that can provide a bright and colorful experience.

The S8 is available in different color options of Midnight Black, Orchid Gray, and Arctic Silver. For an enhanced level of security, this smartphone comes with a tri-security measure which includes a fingerprint sensor, facial recognition and an iris scanner. Here, facial or fingerprint logins can be used interchangeably, or combined for an even more secured login. Users accessing mobile services can be verified using all three of them. Samsung noted that the facial scanning  is not the most secured for biometric logins, hence using either your fingerprint, Iris, or a PIN is preferable as a security measure on this device.

Hardware and Software

The Galaxy S8 is available in two variants, each of which are offered depending on your country. One can either get the Galaxy S8 powered by an octa-core Samsung Exynos 8895 processor for the global model or an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor for the U.S. model. Both variants come with 4GB of RAM and a 64GB internal memory storage that is expandable upto 256GB via microSD card.

  • Galaxy S8 (US) : Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core chipset (2.35GHz quadcore and 1.9GHz quadcore Kryo CPUs), Adreno 540 GPU.
  • Galaxy S8 (Europe and Asia) : Exynos 8895 (2.3GHz quadcore & 1.7GHz quadcore CPUs), ARM Mali-G71 MP20 GPU.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 runs on Android 7.0 Nougat with Samsung's customized User Interface, touchwiz. It also has an IP68 certification, meaning that the device is both water and dust resistant. It can be submerged in upto 1.5 metres of water for upto 30 minutes.

Like Apples's Siri, Amazon's Alexa and Google's Assistant, the S8 also comes with an intelligent digital assistant called, Bixby. This assistant has a voice recognition and optical image recognition capabilities. It can search for places using the camera, as long as these places are within the camera’s region of view. Bixby can be communicated to with one of the following languages: English, Spanish, Korean, or Chinese, and uses Google Translate to translate to a user's preferred language. It can also perform tasks such as read QR codes, edit photos, make calls, and identify real world objects using the camera.

Samsung Galaxy S8 features a 12MP rear camera with an F/1.7 aperture. While the camera is the same resolution as that of the Galaxy S7 and still retains the optical Image stabilization feature, it has no no dual-sensor or variable aperture. The resolution of the Galaxy S8's camera is 8MP with an f/1.7 aperture and autofocus. This camera is an improvement over the S7's 5MP front camera and Iphone 7's f/2.2 aperture. A secondary camera that is used as an iris scanner is also included on the front of the device.

While both cameras may not vary greatly from the one on its predecessor, Samsung claims that there has been software upgrade, hence much thought should not be given to its specs sheet. There is a new multi-frame image processor on both the front and back cameras of the Galaxy S8, and it takes three images each time images are captured and then finds the sharpest of them, thereby reducing blurs .

Battery and Connectivity

The Galaxy S8 has a battery capacity of 3000mAh, which is exactly the same capacity as the Galaxy S7's battery. Due to its large display size, larger than that of the S7 and with more pixels, this battery might drain faster. But then, the phone's display has been set to Full HD by default to manage the battery's power. Users of this device can manually increase the display's resolution in the device settings if they wish.

The Galaxy S8 is not expected to explode since Samsung has included a new ‘8 Point Quality Check’, with improved cycle longevity, allowing only a loss of  5% capacity after one year. There is support for fast charge with its quick charge technology that can give up to 50% charge in 15 minutes and a full charge within an hour. The wireless charging feature that also makes for a fast charge is also included on this device.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is a single SIM smartphone. Connectivity options of this device include 3G, 4G, 3.5 mm headphone jack, USB Type-C port, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and NFC. Its sensors include Proximity, Gyroscope, Compass Magnetometer, Iris scanner, fingerprint, Ambient light, and Accelerometer sensors .
