The Xiaomi Mi 5S has most of the features of the Mi 5S and also comes with better specs as expected from a device tagged the 'Plus' of another. In terms of similarities between both, the Mi 5S Plus still features the same processor but a speedier one, operating system, inbuilt memory capacity on either variants, unexpandable inbuilt storage and an enhanced security sotware. For their differences, the Mi 5S Plus has a better battery backup, larger display screen, better camera setup and a larger RAM size. Given below, is a review of the specifications and price of the Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus, a smartphone from the world's third smartphone maker after Apple and Samsung.

Overview Features

Display and Build

The Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus features a 5.7-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, pixel density of 386 PPI and maximum brightness of 550 nits. Compared to the Mi 5S, this display has the same resolution, but a larger screen and lower pixel density. Judging from these specs, the Mi 5S's display might be sharper and clearer than the Plus's screen, even though the difference might be unnoticeable by most users. It can still offer a great viewing experience during the day and at night.

Serving as a protection on its screen, is a 2.5D Gorrila glass 4 that ensures the screen is not marred by cracks or scratches when it has an impact with rough or hard surfaces. The Mi 5S Plus has a dimension of 154.60 x 77.70 x 7.95mm (height x width x thickness) and weight of 168g. At that dimension and weight, it is less thicker (0.3mm) than the Mi 5S, but heavier (23g); and more thicker (0.65mm) than the Iphone 7 Plus, but lighter (20g). Its body is made of metal and the smartphone is available in different colour options of silver, gray, gold, rose gold.

Like the Xiaomi Mi 5S, this variant also comes with an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that is fast, less prone to errors and is accurate. According to Xiaomi, it can even unlock the device when a dirty or wet finger is placed on it. This eliminates the unresponsiveness usually encountered with other devices when a dirty or wet finger is placed on the scanner. Whether you have water, oil, or any other substance on your fingertips, the operation of this sensor will be unaffected.

Hardware and Software

The Xiaomi Mi 5S Plus is powered by a 64 bit quadcore Qualcomm Snapdragon 821, with a dual core clocked at 2.34GHz, and the other 2.19GHz. The processor is fast, can help in efficient use of the smartphone's power, and  can bring about an acceptable level of performance. According to Xiaomi, the Qualcomm's Clear Sight technology for dual camera support has contributed to the smartphone's photography prowess.

Based on RAM and storage options, this smartphone is availabe in two variants. One variant has 4GB of RAM and inbuit storage of 64GB, while the other has 6GB of RAM and 128GB inbuilt storage. On both variants, their inbuilt storage is unexpandable via microSD card. With a 4GB or 6GB RAM on a smartphone when some PCs are still boasting of a 2GB RAM, the level of multitasking is expected to be high, and will be done seamlessly.

This smartphone also runs on Xiaomi's User Interface, MIUI 8 OS, based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The OS comes with exciting features which include: updates to the gallery with features like mi cloud sync, video editor, photo editor; integrated caller ID that takes away the need to use third party apps; dual Apps feature that allows the use of two instances of an app (example two Viber accounts on the same phone); and more customized HD wallpapers, Ringtones, and themes.

For its most notable difference between the Mi 5S, the Mi 5S Plus has dual 13MP back cameras (one color capturing camera and one monochrome (black & white) capturing camera). The color information from the coloured image is merged at the same time with the monochrome image, and the final image is enhanced. The monochrome camera's inability to capture colours allows its absorbtion ability to increase three times more, hence images with better dynamic range, better contrast, improved sharpness, and enhanced detail can be captured.

Also featured on this smartphone, is a 4MP front camera which is the same resolution as the front camera of the Mi 5. It has an f/2.0 aperture and 1/3" sensor size, wide enough to gather extra light, thereby reducing image noise, blurs and generally, capture images with more quality. Some features of the Mi 5S Plus's camera include dual-LED flash, phase detection autofocus, 4k video recording, and auto-HDR.

Battery and Connectivity

The battery capacity of the Mi 5S Plus is 3,800 mAh, and it is slightly higher than the Mi 5S's battery capacity. It can support upto 18 hours of talk time on 3G, 15 hours of web browsing and 15 hours of music playback time. There is also support for fast charging with its Quick Charge 3.0. With a 30 minute charge, one can have an 83% battery life.

The Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus is a dual SIM (GSM and GSM) smartphone, and accepts two Nano-SIMs. Other connectivity options of this smartphone include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, NFC, USB OTG, 3G and 4G. Its sensors include compass/magnetometer, proximity, accelerometer, ambient light sensor, gyroscope and barometer sensors.

Tech Lass's Verdict:

While the Xiaomi Mi 5 and Mi 5S are great devices, the Mi 5S Plus is even better in more ways than one. Its most impressive feature are its dual camera setup, built with great tech and optimized to deliver excellent images. Its battery capacity is also good, likewise its RAM size and Internal memory capacity on both variants. Also worthy of note are its advanced security system to enhance user security, powerful and speedy processor, and great user Interface, all of which combine to provide a high level of performance and an enhanced user experience.

Without support for expanding the storage's capacity, especially on the variant with a 64GB inbuilt storage,  this might not go down well with some mobile enthusiasts. Unlike the Google Pixel and Pixel XL that also lack the same feature, but provide support for cloud storage, the Mi 5S Plus might run out of space in no time for those who are bent on installing several apps, games, and movies on their phones. Nevertheless, the Mi 5S Plus with its remarkable specs and reasonable price tag is on par with your 2016 smartphone flagships.
