Specifications of the Gionee S6s show that this device can compete with other high end devices like the Moto X Play. But when its price is compared with other devices like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy J7 that have similar and more advaced specs, the S6s has a higher price tag. Would a potential buyer rather go for the S6s instead of these other less expensive devices? the specs below would tell. The Gionee S6s is however a great match for those who don't want to take out such a large chunk out of their wallets but still want a sleek and well built smartphone that can handle their daily tasks.

Overview Features

Display and Build

The Gionee S6s features a 5.5 inch full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and pixel density of 401 PPI. The display which is bright and responsive with good viewing angles makes text, images, games and HD movies look good enough even under bright light. There is also support for auto-brightness with an economical backlight feature to conserve power. Serving as a protection on the screen to minimize cracks and scratches and at the same time give the phone a lovely look is a Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

Its body is made of metal with smooth edges and a gold lining running through the corners at the back. This gives this device an attractive design, a premium feel and durability. The S6s has a weight of 161g and a dimension of 154.5 x 75.6 x 8.15 mm (height x width x thickness). Despite its large screen, the flat spine and curved back of the phone still makes it comfortable to hold. This device is available in different colour options of latte gold and mocha gold.

The Gionee S6s also comes with a fingerprint sensor that is positioned at the device's rear, between Gionee's logo and the rear camera. The finger-print sensor using bio-metric authentication is easy to configure and is quick and accurate at unlocking the phone thereby enhancing user's privacy.

Hardware and Software

The S6s is powered by a MediaTek octa-core processor that is clocked at 1.3 GHz and a Mali T720MP3 GPU. The processor can provide speedy performance without noticeable stutters on the device. It has 3GB of RAM whose capacity should be able to handle multitasking without lags especially while switching between apps. There's also a 32GB of internal memory storage that is expandable up to 128GB via microSD card (hybrid slot). For the MicroSd card, one will have to choose between either using the external storage or a second SIM, as there is no third slot specially made for the microSD card on the S6s.

This smartphone runs on Gionee’s user Interface, Amigo 3.2 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Similar to Huawei’s Emotion UI, this UI screen shows different wallpapers each time the phone is unlocked. Pre-loaded apps on this UI include Xender for sharing files between phones and PC, Mobile anti-theft to lock the device if it gets misplaced and Chameleon app that picks a colour of an object captured by the camera and then make a theme based on that colour. Users can also arrange these apps on different home screens.

The S6s features a 13MP rear camera with Sony IMX258 sensor, f/2.0 aperture, and an LED flash. The camera supports phase detection auto focus and has various modes which include panorama, slow motion, time-lapse, text recognition, HDR, PicNote, smart scan, etc. Users can capture decent shots with a good amount of detail and colour accuracy.

It also has an 8MP front camera with an LED flash, f/2.2 aperture, screen flash support, 1.4 micro meter pixel size and a 5P lens. The screen flash for taking well-lit selfies even during the night and other features of the front camera makes the S6s well optimized for selfies. There are also a few editing options like real-time filters and the Face Beauty 2.0 technology.

Battery and Connectivity

As with the S6, the battery capacity of the Gionee S6s is 3150mAh. Although it has the same capacity as its predecessor, the battery might last longer because this variant of the Amigo comes with some battery specific optimizations. The battery is non-removable, is based on Li-Po technology and uses microUSB 2.0 to charge. It charges quickly and has a battery life which is sufficient for an average user and can last a full day on modest use. Gionee claims the battery can support standby time upto 400 hours on 2G and 394 hours on 3G, and talk time up to 23 hours on 2G  and 11 hours 30 minutes on 3G.

The S6s is a dual SIM (Nano SIM, micro SIM) smartphone with dual Standby where one SIM slot supports either Nano SIM or a microSD card. This means that users of this device will have to sacrifice either a second SIM to use a memory card or a microSD card for a SIM. Both nano and micro SIM slots support 4G LTE networks and VoLTE. Other Connectivity options on the Gionee S6s include Wi-Fi, bluetooth, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Micro-USB. Sensors on this smartphone include proximity, ambient light, accelerometer, and gyroscope sensors.

Apps and Games

The S6s also comes preloaded with apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Hotoday, Chameleon, Swiftkey, and True Caller.

Tech Lass's Verdict:

Most outstanding feature of the S6s is its front flash while its other features are standard ones and not fetures anyone would be surprised to find in a phone with this price tag. At the price it is being offered, there are several smartphones that come with similar features but are less expensive than the S6s. The Gionee S6s is still a decent smartphone with premuim looks, excellent selfie camera, large battery capacity and good performance. This smartphone shines in places where it is intended to and is worth considering.
